Retreat Speakers

10Jun08

Hey NCCS Retreat Planning Crew….

Here is the first thing I want your input on for the retreat.

This year I have decided that we need to mix up the speaking a little bit. We will have 4 main session…Monday evening, Tuesday morning, Tuesday evening, and Wednesday morning. Those are always a great time to worship and be taught. This year I would like to use “in house” speakers. I could use the same speaker for all the sessions or two people for two each, etc.

I am also adding some “seminars for lack of a cooler word at this point” each day for one hour after lunch. I was thinking of asking some of our teachers to come ready to teach a “seminar for lack of a cooler word at this point” about something they are really interested in that they might not normally get to teach on. For instance, if I was going to ask Amy Wallace, I might ask her to do an hour one day on “Songwriting”. I was thinking of having 5 or 6 each day for students to choose from. Every student has to go to one each day, but they would be limited to 30-40 people depending on the topic.

The theme for the retreat is Philippians 2:2 “then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” The main sessions will focus on this theme and the “seminars…” will be based on all sorts of different things that appeal to high school students.

So…here are the 2 questions…

Who would you be interested in hearing from during the main sessions and why?

Who would you be interested in hearing from during the “seminars” and what topics would you like to hear about?

Bonus question…

What is a better word for “seminar”…I’m not sure I’ll have much luck selling the excitement of a seminar :)

instead of seminar, “RECESS” (procounced REKIS). (Really Exciting Class Eliminating Student Sorow). As for session speakers, I assume you mean teachers and faculty and such. I think that the teacher i would like to hear from would be mr. shaffer and mr. cambell. they did an awsome job with the greek love thing. and there was a great student reaction to them considering they are some of the most “social” students at our school.

MEGAN! As for speakers i would really like to hear from someone young(ish). Someone who would be able to keep everyones attention. When people tell a lot of stories it really helps =] Maybe like Nick Person or someone like that.
As for “seminar”, i looked it up in the thesaurus but it only had “conference” which is lame… =[ Are you looking for a clever name or like a normal name? haha

I love the theme verse by the way!

    In Christ,
    Ingrid =]

  4. Overall, I like your ideas for the retreat. Especially the idea of an in-house speaker(s).

    Responses to questions:

#1: I know that two of theses teachers are somewhat introverted and that the other prefers not to speak because of how many students blindly listen to his opinion, but I personally would like to hear from Mr. Carr, Dr. Hedges, and Mr. Shaffer. Why I would like to hear from these three is because that, if given the ability to choose their own topics, I trust that they would come up with some very meaningful and non-cliche messages, as opposed to the typical “you kids need to get saved NOW” that has become little more than monotony.

#2: Besides the already great suggestion of having Mrs. Wallace teach a seminar on songwriting, I would also like to hear from Mr. Lawler about either seminary or music, as he minored, I believe, in music while in college. I, personally, would like to hear from Mr. Long about psychology and what job opportunities are available in that field, and what one can do now to prepare himself for that field.

Bonus: i have no idea. calling it a seminar doesn’t deter me from going to one.

Well, since no one else seems to be answering I guess I’ll take a stab at it. As for main speakers I have no idea, I’m sure that whoever is chosen will be a wonderful encouragement and teacher for us. As for the seminars, which I think could be called Interest Encounters because I’m horribly cheesy, I think it would be pretty cool if some of the NASOTA teachers like Miss Starnes, Hendrix, and Mrs. Wallace spoke on certain aspects of their art that we wouldnt even think about. I dont have any specifics, but I would be really interested in that stuff because I’m an artsy kid and I enjoy all that jazz. Thats just my two cents. Hope that helps.

ok since there are four sessions each day during the upper school retreat maybe have a student from each grade level 9-12 speak I think that it would be a great opportunity for people called by the lord to really have a heart to heart with the student body (2′) I would like to hear from teachers from a variety of backgrounds not necessarily all from Christian homes also maybe we could have a day where teachers share their testimonies with their groups I would really enjoy a retreat that focused on heart to heart and unity that would be awesome! Another word for seminar could be funimars

Hey Megan — I love the ideas that you have for the retreat… sounds great!

I would love to hear Tony Nolan, Brent Crowe, or Jamey Ragle. All three are very engaging speakers that youth would love to listen to and from whom we can further grow in Christ. Brent Crowe is my favorite simply because he relates to all somehow in his message. He also makes me think while he is speaking; which some speakers do not do, if that makes any sense. Anyways, those are a few ideas. Thanks for asking for our input!

Oh and I would love for Six Piece Suit to be there again. I never get tired of them. [=
